It can feel like you are expected to absorb an entire architectural library in a few months. You are not. The core references
If you read these thoroughly and understand the roles and responsibilities they describe, you have covered the majority of what the exam actually rewards.
- Canadian Handbook of Practice for Architects (CHOP): the backbone of the exam. It covers the architect's role, the phases of a project, professional responsibilities, and contract administration. If you read one document carefully, make it this one. Much of the exam is really a CHOP exam in disguise.
- National Building Code of Canada (NBC 2020): the source for code questions, including occupancy classification, fire separations, means of egress, spatial separation, and accessibility. Pair it with the Part 9 Illustrated guide, which turns dense clauses into diagrams for housing and small buildings.
- CCDC contracts, especially CCDC 2 and CCDC 24: the standard construction contracts. Know the roles, the payment and certification process, and how changes and disputes are handled. These map directly onto Sections 3 and 4.
- RAIC Document Six and Document Nine: the client and architect agreement and the definition of architectural services. They define who is responsible for what across the project, which is exactly the lens the exam loves.
For each core document, learn three things: what phase it governs, who the key parties are, and what the architect is and is not responsible for. Most ExAC questions test whether you understand roles and responsibilities, not whether you can quote a clause from memory.
The technical and cost layer

What to study deeply, and what to skim
It is tempting to either ignore the narrow technical guides entirely or, at the other extreme, to read every one of them in full. Both are mistakes. The narrow guides on topics like acoustics, seismic performance, and thermal bridging are worth a careful skim of their key principles and summaries. The exam rarely asks for deep numerical detail from these. It asks whether you know the concept exists and when it applies.
Reserve your deep, repeated study for the core four. That is where repetition pays off, because those documents define the professional judgment the exam is really measuring.
Build your own one-page index
As you work through the library, keep a single-page index: topic on the left, document and chapter on the right. You will not bring it into the exam, but building it forces you to organize the material the way the exam expects, and it becomes your fastest review tool in the final week. Where to find the documents
Some references are free to access, others you will buy or borrow. The building code and energy code are published nationally, the CCDC and RAIC documents come through their respective organizations, and many design and technical texts are standard library or studio holdings you may already own from school. Before spending money, check what your association, your firm, or a local university library already provides. You rarely need a personal copy of everything on the list.
